Spotlight on the Archives: Making our archives more accessible

The Lemon Grove Historical Society, through the generous support of our membership and donors have undertaken the important task of making our archive collections more accessible. Our aim is to fully step into the 21st Century with all of our 19th and 20th century past in tow!

To achieve our goals, we began two important projects. The first was to digitize our collection of the Lemon Grove Review newspapers. The Lemon Grove Review was published between 1948 and 1999 and nothing captures the heart of Lemon Grove’s history better than this local newspaper. We hold the only full set of ‘Lemon Grove Reviews’ and, with help of a grant from the California Reveal Program we were able to catalog all of these newspapers, a necessary first step to converting them to a digitized, online, accessible, format that is now word and subject searchable. With metadata in hand, we applied again to Cal Reveal to fund the actual digitization of the papers. We currently have 1948-1978 and 1989-1999 accessible for anyone to read and search through online. We hope that during the next grant cycle, the remaining 1979-1988 issues will be accepted for digitization.

The original papers are currently in large bound volumes and are rapidly degrading due to age. Digitization is saving our history and making it accessible to all!  There is a wealth of Lemon Grove history contained in these weekly publications. For the first time ever, you can go online and search your Lemon Grove family history! Everybody who was anybody in Lemon Grove was featured in the Lemon Grove Review at one time or another, go ahead, take a look!
